When I had just graduated from pharmacy school , I decided
to try my hand at retail pharmacy in a small community pharmacy in the Glen
Burnie area. On my first day, I received a prescription for a patient who had
just had surgery. The prescription was for a controlled medication called
Percocet, a medication that contained a heavy duty narcotic along with
acetaminophen (Tylenol). When I looked at the prescription, I immediately
noticed that the dose prescribed would far exceed the daily recommended dose of
acetaminophen.In fact, the dose
provided could result in liver damage and possibly liver failure. I proceeded
to call the doctor’s office and explained the situation to the receptionist who
proceeded to transfer me to the doctor. The doctor picked up on a speaker phone
and I proceeded to explain the situation with the acetaminophen. The doctor,
seemingly annoyed, cut me off and told me that he is currently in surgery and
didn’t think that the issue was worth his attention. He told me to change the
prescription as I saw fit and hung up the phone.
