Irritable Bowel Syndrome – IBS

Diet

  1. Decrease refined carbohydrates, especially sugar. High sugar intake paralyzes the bowel and may be a reason for the high incidence of IBS in our society.
  2. Food allergies are very common in people with IBS, the most common culprits are dairy and gluten containing grains. A 3 week trial with food elimination is a good idea.
  3. Eat high fiber foods but be careful to avoid allergenic fiber foods such as grain cereals.

Lifestyle

  1. Stress, anxiety and depression are common among people who suffer with IBS. Pursue appropriate treatment for these issues if they are part of your health history. Relaxation, biofeedback, stress reduction, hypnosis and other practices and treatments can help.
  2. Sleep deprivation increases the symptoms of IBS.
  3. Exercise helps to decrease the number of episodes and severity of IBS. Leisurly walking may be sufficient to help decrease the severity of IBS.

Supplements
