Lutein, provided by Douglas Laboratories, isrnextracted from Marigold flower petals, a potentrnnatural source. In addition, each capsule provides arnsynergistic blend of several green foods includingrnspinach and broccoli.
Lutein is a nutritionally important carotenoid thatoccurs in selected, often brightly colored vegetables, such as spinach and kale.Like many other carotenoids, lutein is an importantantioxidant nutrient that protects healthy cells fromoxidative and free radical damage. Free radicals areunstable chemicals formed in the body duringmetabolism and from exposure to environmentalsources, such as pollution and cigarette smoke. Freeradicals are not inherently bad (they are necessary forenergy metabolism and immune function), but whenthere are excessive numbers of free radicals in thebody, they can attack healthy cells, especially theirmembrane lipids and proteins. This, in turn, isthought to contribute to a number of degenerativediseases.Scientific evidence clearly suggests that lutein’s rolein the retina is to protect the tissue from the damagingeffects of high-energy blue spectrum light andoxygen to which the eyes are subjected more than anyother tissue in the body. Both light and oxygen cancreate free radicals that can play havoc with thehighly unsaturated lipids present in the membranes ofthe visual cells. The uncontrolled generation of freeradicals in the eyes is believed to ultimately lead tomacular degeneration and cataract.
